Is Fusarium Dangerous?

Fusarium is both allergenic and toxigenic. For most healthy people it causes allergy-type symptoms, but it can also cause eye and nail infections and, in vulnerable people, serious systemic infection. It should be removed promptly.

Fusarium carries a wider range of health risks than many common indoor molds. The Environmental Protection Agency explains that molds produce allergens and irritants that can trigger hay-fever-type symptoms and asthma attacks even in people who are not allergic, and Fusarium can do all of that. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adds that immune-compromised people and those with chronic lung disease can develop infections from mold. But Fusarium is also known for two additional risks: it produces mycotoxins, and it can act as an opportunistic pathogen, causing infections. In healthy people these infections are usually limited to the eyes or nails, but in people with weakened immune systems, Fusarium can cause serious, invasive disease. Because of this broader risk profile, an unaddressed Fusarium problem deserves prompt attention.

Fusarium and Eye Infections (Keratitis)

Fusarium is one of the most common causes of fungal keratitis, a serious corneal eye infection, particularly in contact-lens wearers or after an eye injury. Untreated, it can cause scarring and vision loss. This makes Fusarium distinct among household molds.

One of Fusarium’s most notable risks sets it apart from other indoor molds: it is a leading cause of fungal keratitis, an infection of the cornea. This risk is highest for people who wear contact lenses or have had an eye injury, and untreated infections can lead to corneal scarring and permanent vision loss. Fusarium can also cause fungal nail infections. These are not everyday reactions to mold, but they are well documented, and they are part of why a Fusarium problem in a home should be taken seriously. Anyone with eye pain, redness, or vision changes—especially a contact-lens wearer in a mold-affected home—should seek prompt medical care, and should keep a record of that care if a claim may follow.

Fusarium Infections in Vulnerable People

In people with weakened immune systems, Fusarium can cause serious, invasive infections that spread through the body, a condition called fusariosis. For medically fragile tenants, an unaddressed Fusarium problem can be genuinely dangerous.

For people with severely weakened immune systems—such as those undergoing chemotherapy, transplant recipients, or people with blood cancers—Fusarium can move beyond a local infection to cause invasive, disseminated disease. Research published through the National Institutes of Health notes that in immunocompromised patients, Fusarium can spread through the bloodstream and cause a broad spectrum of serious infections, with skin lesions and positive blood cultures among the warning signs. These are medical emergencies requiring antifungal treatment, not something environmental cleanup alone resolves. This heightened danger to vulnerable people is one reason a landlord’s failure to address a known Fusarium problem can carry such serious consequences—and such significant potential liability.

Symptoms of Fusarium Exposure

Fusarium exposure can cause nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy or watering eyes, sore throat, coughing, skin irritation, and worsened asthma—and, less commonly, eye or nail infections. Eye symptoms in a mold-affected home warrant prompt care.

For most people, Fusarium exposure produces allergy-type symptoms: a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watering eyes, throat irritation, coughing, skin rashes, and aggravated asthma. What distinguishes Fusarium is the added possibility of infection-related symptoms—eye pain, redness, blurred vision, or excessive tearing that could signal keratitis, and nail discoloration or thickening. Research summarized by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences notes that people’s sensitivity to mold varies widely, so reactions differ from person to person. A useful clue for the allergic symptoms is timing and place: if they flare at home, especially in a water-damaged room, but ease when you are away, indoor mold may be the cause. Because these symptoms overlap with ordinary allergies and other conditions, connecting them to mold requires medical documentation, which we help clients build with their treating providers.

Why Fusarium Appears After Water Damage

Fusarium thrives in very wet conditions and can grow even at cooler temperatures, so it is often one of the first molds to colonize soaked carpet, walls, and materials after a leak or flood. Its presence points to significant water intrusion.

Fusarium’s biology makes it a signature water-damage mold. It needs a lot of moisture, and because it can keep growing in cooler conditions where some molds slow down, it readily takes hold on the soaked carpet, padding, drywall, and wallpaper left behind after a leak or flood that was not properly dried. The EPA’s guide to mold and moisture stresses that mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours of water exposure and that fixing the moisture source and drying quickly is essential. For tenants, this means Fusarium’s presence usually points to a real, and often ignored, water problem—one the landlord was responsible for addressing. That connection between the mold and a neglected water event is frequently the heart of a Fusarium case.

Where Fusarium Grows in Austin Homes

Fusarium grows on water-damaged carpet and padding, damp walls and wallpaper, in bathrooms and basements, and in humidifiers and HVAC systems with standing water. Austin’s storms and flooding create prime conditions.

Because Fusarium favors very wet conditions, it appears wherever water has pooled or soaked in. Common locations include water-damaged carpet and the padding beneath it, damp walls and wallpaper, bathrooms and basements, and humidifiers, drip pans, and HVAC systems where stagnant water collects. It is especially common after flooding or a significant leak. The EPA advises fixing the water problem, drying everything completely, and discarding porous materials like carpet that cannot be fully cleaned. In Central Texas, heavy storms, flash flooding, and plumbing failures give Fusarium ample opportunity, and in apartments a flood or leak affecting multiple units can spread the problem building-wide.

Is My Landlord Liable for Fusarium in Texas?

In Texas, a landlord can be liable for Fusarium when the tenant did not cause the moisture, gave proper written notice, is current on rent, and the landlord then failed to repair the problem within a reasonable time. These conditions come from the Texas Property Code.

Texas has no mold-specific statute, but landlords must repair conditions that “materially affect the physical health or safety of an ordinary tenant” under the Texas Property Code, and courts apply this to mold that poses a health risk. Fusarium cases often involve a clear water event—a flood or major leak—that the landlord failed to fully remediate, leaving soaked carpet and materials to grow mold. Where a tenant then suffers a documented infection or serious allergic illness, the health stakes and the potential liability are significant. The key legal question is usually the same: did the landlord know about the water damage or mold and fail to fix it within a reasonable time after proper written notice?

State agencies have limited power to help directly. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which licenses mold assessors and remediators, cannot force a landlord to remove mold. That is why a demand letter or lawsuit from an attorney is often what finally gets a neglected Fusarium problem addressed. For the complete framework of landlord duties, tenant remedies, and deadlines, see our main Austin mold attorney page.

Common Fusarium Scenarios We See in Austin

Fusarium problems commonly follow flooding or a major leak, soaked carpet that was never replaced, HVAC and humidifier moisture, and eye infections in contact-lens wearers. Recognizing the pattern helps prove the neglect behind it.

Flooding or a Major Leak

After a flood, burst pipe, or serious roof leak, a unit is not properly dried and Fusarium colonizes the soaked carpet, drywall, and materials. When a landlord did a superficial cleanup instead of removing and replacing water-damaged materials, mold takes hold—and Fusarium is often among the first to appear.

Carpet That Was Never Replaced

Fusarium thrives in water-damaged carpet and padding. When a landlord dries the surface but leaves soaked padding in place—or simply cleans a flooded carpet rather than replacing it—Fusarium can grow underneath, out of sight, continuing to affect the household’s health.

HVAC and Humidifier Moisture

Standing water in HVAC drip pans, humidifiers, and ductwork gives Fusarium a foothold and a way to spread spores through the home. These cases often turn on the landlord’s failure to maintain and service the system.

Eye Infections in Contact-Lens Wearers

A particularly serious pattern is a contact-lens wearer who develops a painful eye infection while living in a Fusarium-affected home. Given Fusarium’s link to fungal keratitis, this can be both a medical emergency and, where a landlord ignored the mold, a serious basis for a claim.

Who Can Be Held Liable for Fusarium?

Depending on the situation, a landlord, property management company, builder or contractor, or a home seller who concealed known water damage can be held liable for a Fusarium problem. Identifying the right defendant is the first step.

Landlords and Property Managers

The most common defendant is a landlord or management company that failed to properly remediate water damage, left soaked carpet in place, or ignored a leak or flood. In apartment communities, the on-site management company and the property owner may share responsibility, and they are frequently separate businesses with separate insurance, which can matter for the recovery available.

Builders and Contractors

Homeowners can sometimes pursue a builder or contractor when defective construction—poor drainage, improper sealing, faulty plumbing, or grading that allows flooding—caused the water intrusion that let Fusarium flourish. These construction-defect claims turn on showing the work was done negligently.

Home Sellers Who Concealed Damage

A seller who knew about mold or a history of flooding or water damage and failed to disclose it may be liable under Texas disclosure laws and the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which require disclosure of known material defects. Concealing prior flooding or a mold problem from a buyer can be the basis of a claim.

What Proper Fusarium Remediation Looks Like

Proper remediation means fixing the moisture source first, then removing water-damaged porous materials like carpet and padding that cannot be fully cleaned—not just drying the surface or cleaning the visible mold. Superficial cleanup lets it return.

Because Fusarium grows in soaked carpet, padding, and materials, genuine remediation usually requires removal, not just cleaning. The EPA’s mold cleanup guidance advises fixing the water problem first, drying everything completely, and discarding porous materials like carpet and ceiling tiles that cannot be fully cleaned—and warns against running an HVAC system suspected of contamination, because it can spread mold. When a landlord instead dries only the surface, cleans a flooded carpet rather than replacing it, or paints over damp drywall, Fusarium predictably returns and can keep growing out of sight beneath the flooring. That inadequate response can itself be evidence of the landlord’s failure to meet the duty to repair, and we often use the contrast between proper remediation and what the landlord actually did to demonstrate the neglect at the center of a case.

How Landlords Fight Fusarium Claims

Landlords commonly argue the tenant caused the water problem, that the health issue came from another source, or that they responded reasonably. Knowing these defenses is how we counter them. Preparation defeats these arguments.

Blaming the Tenant

A frequent defense is that the tenant caused the moisture—by overflowing a tub, failing to report a leak, or not ventilating. We counter with the maintenance history, the building’s condition, and evidence of the true water source, such as a roof, plumbing, or flooding problem the landlord was responsible for.

Disputing the Health Connection

Because mold symptoms and even some infections can have multiple causes, landlords often argue the health problem came from something else. We address this with medical documentation, treating-provider and specialist opinions, and evidence tying the condition—such as a fungal eye infection—to the indoor Fusarium exposure.

Claiming a Reasonable Response

Landlords may claim they handled it by drying and cleaning after the water event. We show the difference between genuine remediation—removing soaked carpet and materials—and a superficial fix, especially when Fusarium returned, demonstrating that the response did not address the problem as the law requires.

How We Prove a Fusarium Case

We prove a Fusarium case by documenting the water event, the landlord’s notice and inaction, the property damage, and the medical link between the exposure and your illness or infection. The clear water-damage trigger often makes the neglect provable.

As with any mold claim, the timeline is central: we gather your written notices, maintenance requests, photos, and communications to show the landlord knew about the water damage and failed to fully remediate it. Because Fusarium follows water events, documenting the flood or leak—and the landlord’s incomplete response, such as leaving soaked carpet in place—is often powerful evidence. A licensed mold assessor or industrial hygienist can document the presence and extent of the mold, including beneath flooring and in HVAC systems, and we work with your medical providers—including eye specialists where keratitis is involved—to connect your diagnosis to the exposure. We also document damaged belongings and any remediation and relocation costs you had to cover.

Compensation in a Fusarium Claim

Fusarium victims may recover for property damage, remediation and relocation costs, medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering, depending on the facts. Infection-related medical costs can be significant.

Provable losses usually anchor the claim: belongings destroyed by mold and water damage—carpet, furniture, and more—remediation you paid for, temporary housing or relocation costs, and other out-of-pocket expenses. Where Fusarium exposure caused or worsened a health condition—an eye infection, a serious allergic illness, or, for a vulnerable person, an invasive infection—you may recover current and future medical bills, which can be substantial, along with wages lost to illness. A serious eye infection with lasting vision effects can carry significant damages. Texas also allows recovery for the physical discomfort, anxiety, and disruption of living in an unsafe home, and where a landlord knew of a serious problem and deliberately ignored it, additional damages may be available for that especially egregious conduct.

What to Do If You Find Fusarium

If you find Fusarium, document it, give your landlord written notice by certified mail, protect your health—especially your eyes and any vulnerable family members—and keep records, then contact an attorney if the landlord fails to act. These steps protect your health and your claim.

Document the Mold and Water Source

Photograph and video the mold and the flood, leak, or water damage behind it, noting dates and affected areas—including carpet and materials. Because Fusarium follows water events, documenting the water source and the landlord’s response is especially valuable.

Give Written Notice

Notify your landlord in writing, by certified mail or a method with tracking, describing the mold and water problem and requesting proper repair—including removal of soaked materials, not just surface drying. Keep a copy. Written, dated notice is a legal prerequisite to the landlord’s repair duty.

Protect Your Eyes and Health

Given Fusarium’s link to eye infections, take special care with contact lenses in a mold-affected home, and see a doctor promptly for any eye pain, redness, or vision changes, or other symptoms—especially for vulnerable household members—so there is a medical record.

Keep Records and Call an Attorney

Save every communication, receipt, and medical record. If the landlord ignores your notice or only dries the surface, contact an attorney. Often a lawyer’s letter prompts action; when it does not, we are prepared to file suit to protect your health and your rights.

Fusarium usually means one thing: water got in and was not properly cleaned up. When a landlord leaves soaked carpet in place or ignores a flood, this water-damage mold can take hold and threaten your health in ways ordinary molds do not—including serious eye infections. You do not have to accept it. If a property owner brushed off your complaints or only dried the surface instead of removing the damage, Texas law gives you rights, and the right attorney can enforce them. Kelley Wolff Injury Attorneys knows how to prove what the landlord knew, document the harm, and pursue full compensation.

We offer free, confidential consultations and handle every case on contingency. To understand the complete legal framework, visit our main Austin mold attorney page or our overview of the types of toxic mold. Do not wait—mold evidence disappears once the problem is remediated or you move out.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Your Top Questions Answered After a Premises Liability

Injured in a Premises Liability accident? Kelley Wolff Injury Attorneys is here to answer your most urgent questions—from handling Premises Liability insurance companies to knowing when to hire an experienced attorney.

most searched topics

How much does a Fusarium mold attorney cost?

Nothing upfront. We handle Fusarium and other mold cases on contingency, so you pay no attorney fees unless we recover compensation. We also advance the costs of investigation and experts, including mold assessors and medical experts. This lets you pursue a claim against a landlord without financial risk during a stressful time.

Is Fusarium worse for contact-lens wearers?

Yes. Fusarium is a leading cause of fungal keratitis, and contact-lens wearers face a higher risk of this serious eye infection. In a Fusarium-affected home, lens wearers should be especially careful with hygiene and see a doctor immediately for any eye pain, redness, or vision changes, which can signal an infection needing urgent treatment.

What color is Fusarium mold?

Fusarium is often white, pink, or reddish to purplish-white, which sets it apart from the green and black indoor molds. It grows on water-damaged carpet, walls, and fabrics. Color alone cannot confirm a species, though—only lab analysis can. Regardless of color, mold growing on water-damaged materials signals a moisture problem to fix.

Does cleaning the carpet get rid of Fusarium?

Usually not. Fusarium grows in soaked carpet and the padding beneath it, so surface cleaning often leaves mold growing out of sight. Proper remediation typically requires removing and replacing water-damaged carpet and padding, not just cleaning them. A landlord who only cleans a flooded carpet has likely not fixed the problem.

Why does Fusarium grow after flooding?

Fusarium thrives in very wet conditions and can grow even at cooler temperatures, so it is often one of the first molds to colonize soaked carpet and materials after a flood or leak. Its presence usually points to significant water damage that was not properly dried and remediated—often the landlord’s responsibility to fix.

Can I sue my landlord for Fusarium in Texas?

Yes, if the landlord failed to fix a water problem you did not cause after receiving proper written notice while you were current on rent. Texas landlords must repair conditions that materially affect a tenant’s health or safety. Fusarium cases are often strong because they follow a clear water event the landlord failed to fully remediate.

What are the symptoms of Fusarium exposure?

Common symptoms include nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy or watering eyes, sore throat, coughing, skin irritation, and worsened asthma. Less commonly, Fusarium causes eye or nail infections. Eye pain or vision changes in a mold-affected home warrant prompt care and, if you are pursuing a claim, a medical record.

Can Fusarium mold cause eye infections?

Yes. Fusarium is one of the most common causes of fungal keratitis, a serious corneal infection, especially in contact-lens wearers or after eye injury. Untreated, it can cause scarring and vision loss. Anyone with eye pain, redness, or vision changes in a mold-affected home should seek prompt medical care.

Is Fusarium mold dangerous?

Fusarium can cause allergy symptoms in most people, but it can also cause eye and nail infections and, in people with weakened immune systems, serious invasive infections. It also produces mycotoxins. This broader risk profile is why an unaddressed Fusarium problem should be taken seriously and removed promptly.

What is Fusarium mold?

Fusarium is a mold, often pink, white, or reddish, that grows on water-damaged carpet, fabrics, and walls, even at cooler temperatures. It is both allergenic and toxin-producing, and is often one of the first molds to appear after a leak or flood. Like all indoor mold, it signals a moisture problem a property owner should address.

My husband and I were in a car accident in December '23 and both sustained spinal injuries. We were definitely overwhelmed getting through the holidays that year, and finding Kelley Wolff helped tremendously. After they accepted our case, they took care of everything to get us set up with medical appointments. The medical process was seamless due to their assistance. We completed treatment within around 4-5 months and then moved from Texas to Colorado - I was worried that this would complicate our case, but they took care to ensure it wouldn't complicate or drag it out.Travis & Colin kept us informed throughout the process, and were very helpful when it came time to give our depositions. We both felt very prepared for the process. Our case ultimately went to mediation, and they ensured we were well-prepared for the mediation, including what to expect during and after. The mediator was able to propose a solution that worked for all parties, which we gladly accepted. Once the funds were approved and allocated, we received checks the next business day.We are so glad to be done with this process, only because it was stressful, but I highly recommend consulting Kelley Wolff if you find yourself in a car accident or other personal injury case. Travis & Colin are both exceptionally kind, brilliant, and thorough attorneys, and I feel confident recommending them to any of my loved ones.
